As every year, gastroenteritis is back. But this year, because of the temperatures below the seasonal averages, she is a little ahead. Since mid-November, several regions have been affected by an epidemic. In the Hauts-de-France and the Grand Est, the epidemic threshold, set at 162 cases per 100,000 inhabitants this year, has been exceeded.
The symptoms of gastroenteritis are easily identifiable : vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, tiredness … You have to be particularly vigilant in people at risk, such as children and the elderly.
Every winter, 21 million French people contract this disease according to Public Health France, nearly a third of the population. How to pbad between the cracks? Here are our tips.
1. Wash your hands regularly
The hands are the most important vector of the gastroenteritis virus. Avoid touching subway bars, door handles, etc. These are real nests for microbes.
It is important to wash your hands regularly. The proper way to wash your hands, as described by INPES (National Institute for Prevention and Health Education), is to first get your hands wet. Then soap them: the fingers, the palms, the top of the hands but also the wrists.
It is not necessary do not forget to clean the space between the fingers as well as the nails. Whenever possible, try drying your hands with a single-use hand towel instead of a hand dryer.
2. Adopt the right foods
Having a proper diet can help to get around the disease. Foods that do not ask too much of your intestines are recommended : Rice, bananas, garlic. They are known to disinfect the gut.
Conversely, avoid raw vegetables, eggs, dairy products, spices, alcohol, fats and raw foods.
It is also important to to drink a lot of water. In case of diarrhea, the body dehydrates more quickly.
3. To ventilate the house
The cold is well installed, it may tend to less air housing. But it is precisely this lack of aeration which promotes the development of bacteria and thus increases the risk of contracting gastroenteritis.
It is advisable to open the windows of each room at least 10 minutes a day. If someone in the house is already contaminated, increase ventilation times: 2 times in the morning, 2 times in the afternoon, and one last time before bedtime.
4. Sleeping
Sleep is an important moment. When one sleeps little, the immune defenses go down. It is therefore necessary to sleep at least 6 hours per night, and ideally 8 hours. To rest well, eat light, limit the use of screens at least 30 minutes before bedtime, and do not be too late.
