A new case of Newcastle disease has been detected among the poultry of an amateur keeper in the municipality of Morlanwelz (Hainaut), announced Friday. Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (Afsca). This new contamination is added to the 11 cases identified since April 26, 2018
A 500-meter protection zone has been delineated around contamination in the amateur keeper. Measures are applicable in this zone, such as the obligation for each holder of poultry or pigeons to make an inventory of his animals and to transmit it to the mayor of his municipality as well as the obligation to vaccinate his animals. the exception of ducks, geese and dwarf quail), or to have proof of valid vaccination.
It is also forbidden in this area to transport poultry or pigeons.
These measures are for a minimum period of 21 days
Asfca recalls that since 2 July, new measures have been taken for all individuals holding poultry or ornamental birds in Belgium. Thus, poultry gathering and sale to and between individuals is prohibited.
The Newcastle disease virus is highly contagious and can infect all types of poultry and birds. Man, on the other hand, is not susceptible to this disease. The consumption of eggs or poultry meat is therefore risk-free.
Afsca also emphasizes that vaccination is the only valid preventive measure against the disease.
