This is the latest AIDS data released a few days before the World AIDS Conference in Amsterdam.
Last year, 940,000 people worldwide died of AIDS-related illnesses. In comparison, at the peak of the epidemic in 2005, 1.9 million deaths worldwide were related to AIDS. And at the time, only 2 million human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) carriers out of a total of 30 million had access to antiretroviral therapy.
Spectacular but fragile progress. At the forefront of concerns, the question of funding: it lacks $ 7 billion per year to progress further. Last year, EUR 20.6 billion was spent on AIDS programs in low- and middle-income countries, which in turn finance 56% of them. These limitations for UN-AIDS undermine the UN's 2020 target of 90% of people living with HIV know their status, 90% of whom are on treatment, and these, 90% have an undetectable viral load.
