Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Theo Francken has temporarily closed this Tuesday the Asylum counter of the Office for Foreigners in Brussels following an attack.
Since Thursday, the Aliens Office has established a daily reception limit for asylum seekers. Sixty people a day are admitted at the counter, which creates a certain nervousness as winter approaches. This Monday, 105 people could not return.
This Tuesday, 23 "vulnerable" people (women, children, patients) had been accepted when a stampede occurred. A security guard was involved in this jostling, which prompted Theo Francken to make his decision. The office finally reopened shortly thereafter and accepted the entry of 40 people.
The number of asylum seekers has been on the rise in recent months, but the reception capacity has been reduced by the Secretary of State N-VA.
The daily presence of the police in front of the Office will be demanded from this Wednesday.
In another tweet, Mr Francken recalled that "lasylum seekers come to ask the Belgian population for international protection " and that "starts with RESPECT and it does not include the distribution of blows to officials".
The Office des Etrangers manages migration flows. It decides in particular on the access of foreigners to the territory or their stay.
