Coroner Donald Nicole has tabled his report on the death of Jacob Therrien, an 11-year-old boy from St-Elzéar. The boy died on October 22, 2017 during a hike with his parents at the Trails of the 3 Monts de Saint-Joseph-de-Coleraine.
The coroner writes that he died naturally as a result of a genetic heart disease. Without knowing it, he was suffering from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the thickening of the walls of the heart which reduces the blood supply.
This genetic abnormality usually causes no symptoms, but in some cases people experience shortness of breath or dizziness. This is what happened with Jacob who could not keep pace with his parents during the hike. He lost consciousness before doing a cardio-respiratory arrest. His parents told the Journal de Québec that they had not seen any harbingers. They believe that it could be rebaduring to perform electrocardiograms for children, especially for young athletes. For the mother, this is almost the only way to diagnose heart disease and is the most easily accessible way. None of the other children have the same illness as Jacob.
