For the first time, parcels and express services accounted for the largest share of the postal sector's turnover, exceeding that of letters, according to the 2017 Postal Observatory of the Belgian Institute of Posts and Telecommunications ( BIPT).
The first market has indeed experienced a very strong increase last year, while the second has experienced a reverse phenomenon. The market remained highly concentrated last year, according to the findings of the Observatory, which looks at the situation of the entire postal sector. The four main service providers (bpost, UPS, DHL Express and DPD) thus have a 83.5% share of the common market, compared with 91.4% in 2010. If we consider only the parcels and express segment , much more competitive, this figure stands at 67.3%.
Letter post accounted for 45% of the total turnover in the sector, compared to 49% in 2016. The parcels and express segment accounted for 50% of revenues last year, while that figure was 46% a year earlier. Finally, home press distribution generated 5% of revenues.
Compared to 2010, letter post saw a decrease of 17 percentage points in favor of the parcel and express segment with the biggest decrease in 2017 (4 percentage points), details BIPT.
In 2017, the parcels and express segment grew by 19.2%, reaching 205 million items (172 million items in 2016). Between 2010 and 2017, the number of shipments has more than doubled.
