At Tesla, Elon Musk seems to bet a lot on a future electric pickup which would be expected within a year and whose design would be rather avant-garde. In the meantime, it's the startup Rivian Automotive who claims to steal the spotlight on this ground with his first vehicle, namely the electric pickup Rivian R1T.
The company has remained quiet for several years on its projects, while giving the means of a production through a former site of Mitsubishi in Illinois.
His projects have advanced enough, and perhaps in reaction to the recent statements of Elon Musk, so it is an impressive vehicle that is announced, armed with batteries of 135 or 180 kWh and of four electric motors developing 750 horses.
The Rivian R1T promises up to 300 miles (480 kilometers) with the first option, or more than 400 miles (640 km) for the second. A basic version will also be offered with a power of 402 horsepower and a battery of 102 kWh, providing 230 miles of autonomy (370 kilometers).
Rivian says his vehicle can achieve a 0-60 mph in 3 seconds and has a carrying capacity of 800 Kg, as well as an ability to tow trailers up to 5 tons.
The vehicle will be equipped with sensors allowing a semi-autonomous level 3 driving on the main roads. The cabin, accommodating up to 5 people, will not lack screens and the vehicle will, as Tesla, enjoy remote software updates.
Rivian offers a price range from from $ 69,000 to $ 90,000 and already allows to order with a deposit of 1000 dollars. The first copies of the Rivian R1T electric pickup are expected in 2020.
The company is also planning to launch a Rivian R1S SUV operating on the same electric platform. It remains to be seen whether the manufacturer will actually launch its vehicle by the end of 2020.
