A protocol concluded between the FPS Economy and DNS Belgium, the manager of domain names ".be" on the internet, allows blocking within 24 hours fraudulent sites from 1 December.
So far, such a possibility was possible only in case of problems identifying the owner of the website. Beyond that, the seizure of the Procuratorate was required, a procedure of minimum 2 weeks leaving time for crooks to scam number of consumers.
The new protocol allows blocking of ".be" domain names that have been fraudulently registered and are used for fraudulent websites or phishing sites (websites that mimic other websites so for example, fraudulently obtaining data on the credit card).
The new procedure will only be applied in case of serious offenses. The owner has a period of two weeks to appeal. After a period of six months, the blocked domain name expires. In all cases where the owner of the website can be clearly identified, the public prosecutor will also be contacted.
For the closing of fraudulent website with another extension that.be (for example.com) the intervention of the parquet floor remains necessary. For these websites, the public prosecutor may request the blocking of Belgian suppliers.
