Call for boycott of Huawei: what consequences?

(CCM) – In full China-USA trade war, US diplomats are currently pressuring the allies to give up the use of Chinese brand Huawei equipment. At least that's what the Wall Street Journal reports. On the french marketthis call for boycott could have consequences.

In France, Huawei is a key supplier to several telecom operators. Recent experiments of 5G connection led by SFR and Bouygues Telecom all rely on Chinese brand technologies. Boycotter Huawei would considerably slow down these strategic projects for the development of the 5G network in France. This perhaps explains the calm displayed by the national authorities in Washington's call for a boycott. The time is pragmatism.

The situation is very different in other countries. Since the summer of 2018, Germany, in Australia and Japanconcrete steps have already been taken to limit Huawei's use of fiber and 5G equipment. Other trading partners in the United States would reflect on the issue, including Italy. It must be said that US accusations against the Chinese supplier are cumbersome: spying, security flaws, data transfer. The brand is accused of acting underhand for the Chinese government. Nothing less…

Faced with this pressure, the French authorities may reconsider their position vis-à-vis the Chinese manufacturer. They ensure that they are vigilant and carefully study all equipment provided by Huawei.
