The death rate of AIDS in Brazil rose from 5.7 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in 2012 to 4.8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in 2017, a decrease of 16%, said Tuesday the Ministry of Health.
This is the first time in twenty years that this rate is declining so significantly.
The Ministry attributed this to a combination of factors, including higher penetration of HIV testing and testing, improved diagnosis, and a shorter interval between diagnosis and the start of treatment.
The number of new AIDS cases also decreased by 16% during this period. In 2012, the figure was 21.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, falling in 2017 to 18.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the ministry.
In addition, Brazil has experienced a significant reduction in HIV transmission from mother to child.
The Brazilian government will launch a national campaign to raise awareness of AIDS, the ministry said. Currently, 73% of new HIV infections in Brazil occur in men aged 15 to 39 years.
