Thibaut Courtois was elected Thursday best goalkeeper of the year 2018 by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS). He is the third Belgian goalkeeper to receive this prize after Jean-Marie Pfaff (1986) and Michel Preud'homme (1994).

Thibaut Courtois was elected by a jury of football experts from 90 countries. The Limburger, 3rd in the World Cup with the Red Devils, had already been voted best goalkeeper of the World Cup 2018 this summer.

Courtois, who moved from Chelsea to Real Madrid after the World Cup, received 181 points. He leads the French world champion Hugo Lloris (109 pts) and the Italian Gianluigi Buffon (59 pts).

Earlier in the week, Croatian Luka Modric had been named best playmaker of the year by the IFFHS. The Real Madrid player, vice-world champion with Croatia, totaled 272 points, ahead of the Argentine Lionel Messi (144 pts), winner in 2015, 2016 and 2017, the Red Devils Eden Hazard (114 pts) and Kevin De Bruyne (36 pts) and the Brazilian Neymar (18 pts).
