A first step towards an HIV vaccine? Researchers released a first report on Saturday showing encouraging progress, with an experimental vaccine that provoked an immune response in humans and protected macaques from infection. This vaccine is now to be tested on 2,600 women in southern Africa.
"These results represent a milestone," said virologist Dan Barouch, study director, in a statement in The Lancet. Tested on 393 humans and 72 Rhesus macaques, two-thirds of which have been protected, the vaccine has no guarantee at this stage. "We must remain cautious," insisted Dan Barouch.
