For at least 23 years, waste is dumped on the site of the old quarry in Biesmerée in defiance of all environmental and even legal considerations, reveals Le Vif. For the local Ecolo, this appalling information requires clarification and rapid reaction.
According to Vif, the technical service of the municipality of Mettet discharges since 1995, on the site of the quarry in Biesmerée waste which are supposed to lead in adapted treatment channels. On site, there is the presence of stones, pieces of reinforced concrete, cuttings, asbestos, hydrocarbon, bitumen, tires, sludge cleaning ditches, sludge cleaning drains, waste of the truck brush, etc.
"However, by the year 2000, the environment police had deplored this irregular use of the quarry by the municipality of Mettet and the politicians were committed to put an end to these practices. as is evidenced by a damning report of the director general of the commune written a few weeks ago and cited by the Vif."
"During the election campaign, we had said and repeated that Mettet could not remain at a standstill, with twentieth century political practices, convinced that a new dynamic and another governance were indispensable, compared to 'we have always done like it'. The information published today goes beyond what we feared, they are unacceptable " explain Bénédicte Rochet and Philippe Lesne, future communal councilors Ecolo.
"Bourgmestre Yves Delforge evokes a legacy from the past. How can he say that when he has been at the College for 18 years? His responsibility, that of his political group and the other groups that have managed Mettet for decades, is clearly engaged. Strong acts must be done very quickly. As new elected officials, we expect to appeal to the College this December. It is necessary that the light be made on the responsibilities of each one and especially that solutions are implemented to rehabilitate the site " conclude the two elected ecologists.
For his part, the Walloon MP Stéphane Hazée has already decided to refer the Walloon Minister for the Environment, Carlo Di Antonio, for a rapid reaction from the Region, both in terms of the characterization and rehabilitation of the site only from the point of view of possible judicial responsibilities.
