The College of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode decided Tuesday to crack down on the shared electric scooters that hang on the sidewalks by prohibiting wild parking, according to information from several media confirmed Thursday late in the day by Bourgmestre Emir Kir. Defined areas will be defined to store them legally at the Place Saint-Josse, Place Rogier, Esplanade Madou and near the metro station Botanique. This new regulation is yet to be submitted to the next communal council of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, which will meet on March 13th.
Given the success of scooters in the development of soft mobility, the mayor believes that we must define a framework to regulate their use: "We are obviously all in favor of alternatives to avoid pollution, but here we are left with more in addition to electric bikes and sidewalk scooters, they prevent pedestrians and people with reduced mobility from getting in. They are also endangered when their users are driving fast on sidewalks ". Saint-Josse-ten-Noode being a particularly dense municipality, the problem is more strongly pregnant. It has many small streets surrounded by narrow sidewalks.
The mayor recalls that the security of public space is the responsibility of the municipality. "It is normal at a given moment to take measures to safeguard the security and usability of the public space while allowing to have identified places for the bike park", considers Emir Kir. "People do not have the right to clutter the sidewalks".
Once the regulation is adopted, the scooters that will be left on the sidewalks will be confiscated and the offenses more widely sanctioned. The municipal administrative sanctions (SAC) can be up to 350 euros. Users will be able to see their bad behavior sanctioned, but companies like Lime, which provides scooters, will also have to pay fines to recover their property.
