Download Edge (Chromium) on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 is now possible!

Microsoft has made its Chromium-based Edge browser available to Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users. After availability for users of Windows 10 and Mac, Microsoft extends the availability of its browser, still in development, on its old operating systems.

Last December, Microsoft surprised everyone by announcing the release of its Chromium-based Edge browser. Finished the internal rendering engine, Edge would now be based on an open source engine, the same as used by Google for its Chrome browser. Although this has been somewhat unwelcome by the defenders of independent browsers, Microsoft has seen in this choice a way to better comply with Web standards.

Last April, the first Preview version of Edge Chromium was made available to users of Windows 10. Microsoft officials at the time announced the arrival of the browser for other operating systems, and it was is done! A month later, the firm released a version for Mac OS users. It is now the turn of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 to be supported. We do not currently know if Linux will be too.

Just like for Windows 10, no final version of the new Edge has been released yet. Microsoft hopes to do it soon, but still has some work to do! Although the browser has evolved a lot since its inception, many bugs are still to report, such as display problems with the dark mode of Windows 10.

If you want to test the browser in Preview, you can go here to find out how to download it. You will probably find that no matter which system you are running Edge Chromium on, the user experience and features remain very similar. Let's hope that the browser is compatible with YouTube, no matter what system it is running! =)
