Extraterrestrials close to us? Researchers lift the veil

The extraterrestrial intelligence research program "Breakthrough Listen Initiative" has not discovered any signals from a possible extraterrestrial civilization around 1,327 nearby stars, according to new results published by The Astrophysical Journal.

"There are not incredibly advanced civilizations that are trying to contact us with powerful transmitters," said Danny Price, an astrophysicist at the University of California, Berkeley, who participated in the study.

There may, however, be a number of reasons for the absence of extraterrestrial signals: the research may have focused on the wrong frequencies or these signals have been scrambled by radio interference with the Earth.

In their latest study, researchers badyzed one million gigabytes of radio or optical wave data by examining more than 1,000 stars within 160 light years of the Blue Planet.

This research was conducted as part of the "Breakthrough Listen Initiative", a decade-long, $ 100 million study created by Russian millionaire Yuri Milner, which aims to search for traces of technological signatures in space. In other words: transmissions or other elements created by advanced civilizations of other worlds.

The project, launched in 2015, is based on two of the most powerful telescopes in the world: Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia (USA) and Parkes Telescope in Australia.
