The French health minister announced Tuesday that from December 10, male condoms will be reimbursed to fight against badually transmitted infections (STIs) among young people.
France would be the country of love. The country's Minister of Health, Agnès Buzyn, announced the reimbursement of certain condoms. Both men and women will be able to go to a pharmacy with a prescription written by a doctor or midwife to buy condoms. The latter will be reimbursed up to 60% on the basis of a selling price of 1.30 euro the box of 6, 2.60 euros the box of 12 and 5.20 euros the box of 24.
"Today, we discover about 6,000 new cases of HIV infection every year, especially among young people. Around 800 to 1,000 new cases among people under 25 "says the Minister to explain its measure. Today, nearly two-thirds of students and 40% of high school students do not routinely wear a condom during bad. Also, the measure has been validated by the French High Health Authority (HAS).
The measure concerns the contraceptives of the brand Eden, which depends on the French Majorelle laboratory. According to a spokesman for the group, "in the face of the explosion of badually transmitted infections (STIs), directly related to the decline in protection, we proposed to provide male condoms prescribed by the doctor and reimbursable by the Social Security, to the end of 2017 ". This initiative therefore aims to facilitate young people's access to condoms.
"It is an additional chance for some to access it because having to buy a box of condom, it has a cost for adolescents," said Agnès Buzyn. "We can now, when we are young or when we present particular risks, or not elsewhere, when we are a woman or when we are a man, go see his doctor and have condoms refunded on medical prescription", she says.
" It's good news. The more we give ourselves the means to fight against the HIV, the better it is, "says Caroline Izambert, advocacy officer at Aides. "The important thing is to fight against all missed opportunities. When one goes to see his GP for a recurring back pain for example, why not take the opportunity to address the issue of risks related to baduality? Today, this is not done enough, these are missed opportunities, "she says.
A similar measure was taken in Belgium two years ago. Christian (MC) and socialist (Solidaris) mutual societies repay condoms for 40 euros and 50 euros respectively, on presentation of the receipt.
