Health Canada warns the public against the use of products containing human placenta, a practice that can pose serious health risks.
The federal ministry said Tuesday that the human placenta is a "biological material" and as such, it could contain infectious agents such as bacteria or viruses of the hepatitis or HIV.
Some mothers consume placenta (steaming, cooking, dehydration and encapsulation) to prevent postpartum depression or increase bad milk production. However, Health Canada is of the opinion that there is currently no "scientific evidence supporting health benefits from human placenta consumption".
In addition, considering products containing placenta as drugs, Health Canada recalls that they are therefore subject to the requirements of the Food and Drugs Act and the Food and Drug Regulations and, as such, they must be approved before it can be sold in Canada.
"To do this, Health Canada must first obtain data to support its safety and effectiveness for review. To date, Health Canada has not registered any health products containing human placenta for consumption in Canada, "reads a news release.
In Quebec, the Ministry of Health also strongly advises the ingestion of the placenta. Since July 2017, it must be given to parents who request it, according to a directive of the Ministry.
