The resumption of new lines is an additional step for the extension of the network of greenways in Wallonia, the backbone of the Walloon cycling network, said the minister, recalling his desire to increase to 5% in 2030 – against 1% currently – the modal share of the bike in the daily commute.

The Walloon Minister of Mobility and Public Works Carlo Di Antonio (cdH) has just signed a series of long-term leases between Wallonia and SNCB, allowing the Region to have the basis of the former Ronse railways – Frasnes-lez-Anvaing; Cuesmes – Fauroeulx and Clabecq – Braine l'Alleud to develop them into greenways. Since 1995, Wallonia has been developing its Autonomous Network of Slow Lanes (RAVeL) for non-motorized traffic. This network of nearly 1,500 km is mainly made up of abandoned railway lines and service roads along the waterways.

In this context, the Region and SNCB concluded a first agreement in 1997, renewed in March 2017 with SNCB and in September 2018 with Infrabel. The text provides, inter alia, that Wallonia and the Belgian Railways sign 99-year long emphyteutic leases for each of the former railway lines intended for RAVeL.
