As part of the fight against neglected tropical diseases, including lymphatic filariasis and in particular cases of hydrocele, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the West African Health Organization (WAHO) and the World Bank , organizes a surgical camp for the management of hydrocele cases. The launching ceremony took place this Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at the University Hospital Center of Ouahigouya.
The Ministry of Health has made the fight against neglected tropical diseases one of its priorities. Lymphatic filariasis, through its chronic manifestations lymphoedema and hydrocele, is the second leading cause of permanent disability in the world. Thanks to the implementation of the sub-regional project "Fight against seasonal malaria and neglected tropical diseases", patients from Dori, Fada N'Gourma and Ouahigouya will benefit from hydrocele surgery camps.
Restoring the dignity of stigmatized patients
A hydrocele, it must be remembered, is an accumulation of fluid in a "pocket" surrounding the testicle. This hydrocele is responsible for an increase in the volume more or less important of a purse. It is a benign disease that does not risk becoming infected or evolve to a more serious disease, hence the need for intervention to restore the stock market its normal volume.
For the director of health protection of the population, Dr. Lionel Wilfrid Ouedraogo, the goal of this action is to contribute to the elimination of lymphatic filariasis but also to restore the taste of living to these poor people, victims of stigma. It also aims to improve their social and family relationships and to make them more productive in society.
During the official opening ceremony of the hydrocele surgery camps, the 2nd deputy mayor of Ouahigouya, Djénéba Sodré, said that without the promotion of health, no development is possible, hence his positive appreciation of the organization of the camps which will help to take care of and relieve the sick.
Yatenga High Commissioner Séni Kabou, representing the governor of the Northern Region, welcomed the presence of expert surgeons from Mali and Niger to support and share experiences with their Burkinabe colleagues. The Governor's emissary, on behalf of the high authorities of Burkina Faso, thanked the World Bank, WAHO and all the partners that accompany our country in its daily struggle against neglected tropical diseases that are an integral part of the global goals.
Hydrocele surgery, an act that heals
Dr. Tiébely Aly, Urologist Surgeon in Charge of Operations, reported that 360 cases of hydroceles will undergo surgery, including 120 in the Northern Region. The intervention takes place in the context of a hospitalization in outpatient surgery and is made by an incision at the stock exchange and consists of removing the bag of liquid or frowning, depending on the anomalies encountered.
