Poor Robin Hood. In 2018, it is no more than a concept, crushed by the mill of the pop-culture. Look no further for some medieval gesture here. Robin de Loxley (Taron Egerton), prince of thieves, is immersed in a kind of post-parallel universeGame Of Thrones, post-Assbadin's Creed and post-superheroes.
The crusade in which he participates becomes the seat of Fallujah, the crossbows turn into machine guns with arrows. Nottingham looks like an antechamber to the Isengard of Lord of the Rings, with gigantic mine and blast furnaces recycled from Clabecq. The ugly sheriff endorses Trump's rhetoric and General Krennic's neo-fascist uniform of Rogue One (That's good: it's the same Ben Mendelsohn who plays it) and his henchmen look like his Death Troopers, with Death Eater masks. A party at the castle becomes fiesta bunga bunga with decadent casino games and decadent aristos Hungers Games. The miserable revolt opposes antifas and robocops with Molotov badtails and anti-riot shields. F. Murray Abraham lends himself to the game, nudging his hat of evil church man of the Name of the Rose (we think we dream …). Playing the lecherous good lords by day and the widow's defender and the orphan at night, Robin makes his Batman – or rather the Green Arrow the quilted jacket and the hood – well, okay, the DC Comics hero had stolen it first.
This fanciful and outrageous artistic direction surprises all the more from Otto Bathurst, one of the directors of the excellent series. Peaky Blinders, otherwise rooted in reality. But it is still nothing next to a scenario with grotesque inconsistencies (the good Moor who walks quietly in the Nazi Nottingham), whose authors are clearly not arrows. Douglas Fairbanks, Errol Flynn, Russel Crowe and even Kevin Costner have no problem: it is not the pale Taron Egerton who will dethrone them.
