Air navigation service providers will manage Belgian airspace with a single system from 2024.

A letter of intent to this effect was signed on Thursday by Skeyes, the Belgian Defense and the Eurocontrol Maastricht Upper Airspace Control Center (MUAC). This will provide much more efficient services to users of Belgian airspace. Skeyes (formerly Belgocontrol), the body responsible for air traffic control in Belgium, and the Defense had already expressed their common ambition to provide civil and military air navigation services integrated into the airspace by 2030.

From its air traffic control center in Maastricht, Eurocontrol, the body responsible for harmonizing and unifying the management of air navigation in Europe, is already providing integrated civil and military air navigation services. in the upper airspace of the Benelux countries and northwestern Germany.

All three agencies currently use different air traffic management systems. Enhanced service cooperation will be facilitated by the convergence of systems, they hope.

A common civil and military air traffic management system would be a powerful catalyst for addressing the challenges of capacity and economic efficiency in Belgian airspace, Skeyes believes. This would also be an efficient and effective external solution in case of failure of one of the facilities that provides technical services.
