Dutch researchers have just ended a clinical study after the deaths of 11 babies. Launched in 2015, it was intended to prescribe viagra to pregnant women whose child already had developmental delays in their womb to see if the drug could have a positive effect on it.
C is a shocking news just announced by the University Hospital Center of Amsterdam. 11 babies died during their mother's pregnancy for the purpose of a scientific study. With severe developmental problems, scientists had the idea of prescribing viagra to their mum to see if the famous erectile dysfunction drug could promote blood flow to the placenta and therefore, fetal growth
The chances of survival of children with such developmental delays in pregnancy are reduced, which justified the scientists' study which, if successful, could have saved many lives. Launched in 2015 in ten Dutch hospitals and 183 women, the tests have just ended after the announcement of these terrible results.
If none of the women had to suffer complication due to the taking of viagra , 19 babies died in this experiment, 11 of them certainly due to pulmonary hypertension that could be related to the drug. Six infants born prematurely also suffered from these same ailments but survived.
Half of the women who participated in the research were prescribed a placebo. Of this group, nine child deaths were identified but none was related to any lung problem. In contrast, 3 babies were born with these complications but survived. Wessel Ganzevoort, the gynecologist who led the study, is shocked by these results and badured the daily De Volkskrant that, "The last thing we want is to harm patients" . The scientist also said that their results were shared with Canadian colleagues who are currently doing similar research.
According to several Dutch media, about ten women who participated in the study would still be pregnant and very anxious.
