Switzerland, like France, does not intend to reimburse condoms, even those on prescription. On the eve of World AIDS Day, Bern stresses the importance of this prevention tool.
Compulsory health insurance does not reimburse condoms, said the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), interviewed by Keystone-ATS. The office recalls, however, that condoms are presented as an essential prevention tool in their public awareness and information campaigns (lovelife.ch). This is primarily for target groups and populations that are particularly vulnerable to HIV and other badually transmitted infections (STIs).
Switzerland will not adopt the measure recently introduced by France. As early as December 10, the French will be able to receive in the pharmacy "boxes of 6, 12 or 24 condoms (…) on presentation of a prescription from a doctor or a midwife", a the French Ministry of Health said in a statement. A rare measure, which some Belgian mutuals also adopted in 2016.
Prevention not reimbursed
Pre-exposure prophylaxis against HIV is no more likely to be reimbursed. The Federal Council has recently refused a request for PrEP HIV coverage through compulsory health care insurance. In a statement released Thursday, the AIDS Group Geneva says it is not convinced by the arguments put forward by the government in response to the question put by the national councilor Mathias Reynard (PS / VS) on this prophylaxis.
"It is incomprehensible that the FOPH and the SwissPrEPared study believe that it is necessary to conduct yet another study on PrEP before considering whether reimbursement through compulsory health care is appropriate," reacts Thursday the Group in a statement. (Ps / nxp)
