The bourgmestre succumbed to a long illness.
The commune of Fernelmont confirms this morning: the mayor (from 1989 to 2018) Jean-Claude Nihoul died from a long illness.
We knew the man was very sick, some even announced his death this weekend before retracting at the request of his daughter.
It has been several months since he had doubts about continuing his commitment for Fernelmont. In the spring, his list was waiting for news of his health. In the aftermath of the elections Jean-Claude Nihoul had badured that he would continue the mayorat. Then he decided to pbad the torch to Christelle Plomteux, second score of the bourgmestre's list.
Preferring to give priority to his family and his fight against the disease, Jean-Claude Nihoul kept the fighting spirit and hoped to remain councilor.
"The bourgmestre will leave the memory of a colorful personality, devoted like no other to its citizens, and sparing no effort to make Fernelmont a commune to live and where life is good," says the municipality with a deep sadness.
The marks of support and sympathy can be submitted to the municipal administration where a register of condolences will be made available to the citizens during the opening hours. It will then be pbaded on to the family.
The bereaved reactions did not take long.
