The use of so-called "alternative" or "complementary" therapies to treat cancer, while denying conventional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, would double the risk of dying from the disease, an American study published in "Journal of the American Medical Association."
According to researchers at the Yale University School of Medicine in the United States, followers of alternative therapies such as naturopathy, homeopathy, traditional Chinese medicine or vitamins, plants, minerals, and other specialty diets are 2.08 times more likely to die of cancer after five years than patients who reject such treatments.
The researchers explain this data by pointing out that Patients who use alternative therapies generally have a greater tendency to discontinue or outright deny conventional therapies.
Year One Statistical badysis has also shown that patients who use complementary therapies in addition to conventional treatments are no more likely to die than those who only adhere to regular treatments.
More specifically, the authors of In a statistical badysis of a cohort of patients with bad, lung, prostate or colorectal cancer, the study found that 34.1% of adherents refused chemotherapy, 53% radiotherapy and 33.7% hormonal therapies. On the other hand, only 7% of them refused to undergo surgery.
At least half of Americans with cancer would use some form of alternative or complementary therapy, such as yoga or medication, during their conventional treatments. Researchers recognize that some of these therapies do have a positive effect on the well-being of patients and can improve their quality of life while they fight the disease.
