Two people were poisoned Tuesday night carbon monoxide in a building in Auderghem where a problem of evacuation of flue gas landed in eight apartments. Almost at the same time there was a similar incident in Schaerbeek, where a young woman was poisoned in her bathroom which was insufficiently ventilated, say firefighters in Brussels.
The first incident occurred in a building on rue François-Bernard Verboven in Auderghem, where the inhabitant of the ground floor called the fire department around 8:16 pm because his carbon monoxide detector had gone out. After taking measurements in several apartments, firefighters concluded that there was a problem with flue gas discharge due to a faulty installation or leak.
The burners were sealed in four apartments where the occupants were present, while Sibelga sealed four gas meters in flats whose inhabitants were absent. The stairwell and dwellings were ventilated and two people slightly intoxicated with CO were taken to the hospital.
Firefighters received a call around 8:15 pm for a third carbon monoxide poisoning in an apartment on rue Royale Sainte-Marie in Schaerbeek. A young man was uncomfortable in his bathroom which was not ventilated enough. She was taken to hospital and Sibelga had her water heater sealed.
