"The FGTB demands a serious increase in purchasing power," the Socialist Trade Union said Wednesday in reaction to a recent report by the International Labor Organization (ILO) that states a decline in purchasing power for workers 2.3% in the last three years.
Moreover, according to the Socialist Trade Union, a pure application of the law on competitiveness could result in a complete blockage of wages for the next two years. This is indicated by the first figures of the Central Council of the Economy. The FGTB immediately rejects such a blockage.
"The index jump, small wage increases, an increase in excise taxes and the dismantling of crucial public amenities like public transport have eroded household incomes," she says. The FGTB points out that, since 1996, Belgian wages have been 12% behind the increase in productivity. For the socialist union, they must be able to increase in the same way as productivity and the cost of living. This is a priority demand that the organization will put on the table during the upcoming wage negotiations (AIP 2019-2020).
"We call on employers to take up their responsibilities and work in consultation with trade unions to find solutions to improve the purchasing power of workers through the conclusion of agreements at all levels", concludes the union .
