The personality
In principle, the Minister of Justice Koen Geens should not obstruct the installation at the head of the Court of Cbadation Beatrijs Deconinck, the first woman to be appointed (by the High Council of Justice) to the position of first President (the 37th in history), as Echo revealed on Thursday. It will take office on April 1, 2019.
The title, which was to go to a Dutch-speaker, was also coveted by the civil servant Geert Jocqué.
Yproise, Mrs Deconinck was a counselor at the Court of Appeal of Ghent before joining the Court of Cbadation in 2006 and in 2014 became President of the First Chamber.
Perfectly bilingual, married to Jacques Van Malleghem, lawyer from Ghent, she is also co-chair of the Interuniversity Center for Judicial Law. This distinguished civilian, a great specialist in the procedure, is a well-known academic who was a lecturer at the University of Ghent. She has also worked on various chapters of the "pot-pourri" laws prepared by Minister Geens, which makes the confirmation of her appointment all the more obvious.
Considered by her peers to be dynamic and effective, Beatrijs Deconinck does not seek light and may be less visible in the media than her predecessor, the knight Jean de Codt, who in recent years has not hesitated to regularly niche to say all the bad about how the executive deals with justice.
