Berhalter of the USMNT: "We know we can stay" with tough teams like Chile

HOUSTON – Reaction to Tuesday's 1-1 tie between the US men's national team and Chile was completely opposed – with one team taking a step in the right direction, while the other questioned the continuity of his main coach.

"Very impressive" is how USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter categorized his team's performance against defending champions Copa América, contenting themselves with their performances on the pitch.

"We have learned resilience, knowing that we can play tough games against tough opponents who have the strength that can hurt us," said Berhalter. "We know we can hang on and know we can push them to the limit."

During his four-month tenure, Berhalter now has three wins and one tie as his vision of how he wants his team to play begins to take shape.

"It was a great test for the guys," said Berhalter. "I'm really happy to have played a game like this and I think we learned a lot."

The competition against Chile allowed USMNT players to better control the management of adversity – Chile dominated possession of the ball and left the United States on hold for much of the second half – and left them a positive outlook for the future. In the future.

"There have been times when we have done well and at other times, but that's why we play these games to work on things we need to improve on," said defender DeAndre. Yedlin, who wore the captain's armband.

The atmosphere was significantly less positive on the Chilean side. The draw, which followed a 3-1 loss to Mexico, looked more like a defeat and almost all players rushed into the mixed zone to avoid questions from reporters.

Coach Reinaldo Rueda, who replaced Juan Antonio Pizzi after La Roja failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, was hit hard by critics in the Chilean press during the post-match press conference.

"I knew why I was coming, that … [it] would be a very big challenge, big, very difficult, "said Rueda. "It will not be easy."

Rueda is sort of an expert in rebuilding teams and qualifying for the World Cup – he did it with Honduras in 2010 and Ecuador in 2014. But in Chile, we still hope win, which La Roja have spoiled their fans in recent years. Many have already called for his resignation and supporters of the BBVA Compass Stadium have displayed a banner that reads "Get out Rueda".

"There is desperation to win and it's normal because this team is a winner and everyone is used to it," Rueda said, questioned about the lack of victories under his command. "But this concept can hurt us."
