You do not need to spend $ 1,000 or more for a new phone. You can, if you come to have own the last and the best, but there are many good phones that cost a lot less. The phone makers know it.

Google has recently started selling its Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL, Apple has sold the iPhone XR and older iPhones, and Samsung is offering a range of more affordable A Series phones than some of its flagship products.

I have tested many of them and here are some of my favorite phones that cost less than $ 1,000.

OnePlus 7 Pro ($ 669): flagship features, without the crazy price

The OnePlus 7 Pro offers the same Snapdragon 855 processor as the leading Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10, a RAM and a superb (and fast!) Screen. This hardware makes the OnePlus 7 Pro one of the smoothest smartphones on the market.

Plus, you get a real edge-to-edge display. To unlock it, you use a fingerprint sensor hidden under the touch screen. There is no notch or puncture for the front camera. Instead, a small electric motor makes the camera appear when needed and hides it inside when it is not in use.

You give up however a few things. Although OnePlus has demonstrated that the 7 Pro can take some dunks, there is no independently verified water resistance level. Wireless charging is also not available, although the 7 Pro supports fast charging.

Samsung Galaxy S10e ($ 499 – $ 749): a great value for Samsung

If you want a flagship branded product at a reduced price, the Samsung Galaxy S10e is your best choice. Now that it has been out for a few months, it is often discounted at a suggested retail price of $ 749.99. Unlike many iPhone offers, you do not need to add a new line nor buy multiple phones to get a good price. Walmart, for example, currently sells the S10e at $ 499 if you get the rose or white or $ 599 if you want blue or black.

For this price, you get the latest processor, 128GB of storage, a superb high-end screen and great cameras. In addition, you get total resistance to IP68 water and a wireless charge. Of course, you may not have a built-in fingerprint reader, it's actually on the side of the phone, but the S10e also has all the features you expect from a flagship phone in 2019 .

iPhone 8 ($ 599): If you need an iPhone

The iPhone 8

For some people, having an iPhone is not negotiable. Whether your friends require blue allegiance or you are attached to an Apple Watch, the iPhone is sometimes the only option. In this case, I recommend the iPhone 8.

It still has water resistance, wireless charging, a very fast processor and a good camera. The biggest disappointment is the display, which seems dated with its big glasses and smaller size. Apple also supports older phones with software updates.

Just know that new iPhones will be launched in the coming weeks. When this happens, prices of old models will inevitably fall. So maybe wait for a price cut.

Google Pixel 3a / 3a XL ($ 399 / $ 479): For the camera buffs on a budget

Google Pixel 3a XL

Todd Haselton | CNBC

The Google Pixel 3a XL consistently takes better pictures than the iPhone XS but costs less than $ 500. Even the OnePlus 7 Pro triple camera can not surpass the pixel under difficult lighting. With an excellent portrait mode and an unbeatable "Night Sight" feature for dark scenes, the Pixel 3a is just as powerful as its more expensive brother, the Pixel 3.

The disadvantage is that, to reach its price level of $ 399, Google had to reduce its costs elsewhere. The Pixel 3a comes with a midrange processor that is significantly slower than normal pixels. Applications are visibly slower to open, photos are slow to process, and graphics-intensive games are more hectic. And, even though it still has good colors and good brightness, the screen has large frames that make the phone significantly less expensive.

Finally, as with the OnePlus 7 Pro, there is no official waterproofing and the Pixel 3a can not charge wirelessly. If you give priority to clean software and the amazing camera of the normal Pixel, the Pixel 3a is the cheapest way to get it.

Samsung Galaxy A50 ($ 350): more speed

The Samsung Galaxy A50 offers a ton of high-end features for its $ 350 price tag. It has a large, vibrant screen, as you would a Samsung phone. It offers an integrated fingerprint reader for unlocking, two cameras and a depth sensor for portraits.

You also have a microSD card slot to add more storage and a headphone jack, which many of the flagship phones no longer offer, including Samsung's new Galaxy Note 10. Finally, a huge battery provides enough juice for the day.

Not surprisingly, the A50 lacks wireless charging or water resistance. Like the Pixel, it also has a lower-level processor that does not use on a daily basis, as would a flagship phone. It seems that ticking is slower than Pixel 3a and noticeably slower than high-end phones, but you have to wait for it.
