The saying goes that living well is the best revenge. In spite of all the Braves' story with Jose Ureña, they chose to avoid any useless gameplay and on the contrary took a good beatdown on the old Friday night. The Braves easily took the Marlins, 7-1.
Mike Soroka launched one of the best games of his career – an eight-run masterpiece that allowed him to qualify for ninth – and Ronald Acuña, Jr. scored a score of 3 to 5 with a home win against Ureña. Suffice to say, it was a good night to be a 21-year-old Atlanta Brave.
Ureña failed to get out of the fourth inning and gave a point on each of her runs. The eye test showed that her last line was as ugly as she looked – 3+ IP, 11 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 HR. The Braves are now responsible for two of his worst starts of the year.
On the other side, Soroka lived up to her abilities. It was the second time in his last four starts, he has pitched eight innings. This time, he took out six and only two, and the race that was marked did not even hit home. He neutralized a Marlins attack that had increased in recent weeks, largely due to the fact that 21 first-throw strikes were inflicted on the 28 batters he faced. Now that he has enough runs to qualify for the ERA title, he's still only 1.75 points behind Hyun-Jin Ryu.
The Braves went early in the race, while one of Dansby Swanson's singles gave way to a Freddie Freeman rocket in the upper deck of the right field to take the score to 2-0. It was Freddie's 17th lap and one of the most majestic of his circuit this season.
It is probably fair to say that everyone had an eye on the Acuña-Ureña match after the fireworks last year. After Ureña won the battle in the first by inducing a grounding, Acuña was slightly avenged at the second inning by crushing a single RBI to take home Ozzie Albies and bring the score to 3-0. It was quite the historic RBI for Acuña – it was the 100th of his young career. I'm sure he was not happier driving than Ozzie.
While the 100th RBI Acuña was at the foot of the wall, its 101st RBI crossed it.
Just like that, it was 5-0.
Now that the retaliation circle is officially closed, it's nice to see Acuña come back to punish the Marlins. He did not stop after the bold and daring flop of the bat – he also hit a RBI single in the right field of the fifth goal to bring the attack to a touchdown.
After Soroka drove Curtis Granderson to the ninth row, Brian Snitker pulled in Dan Winkler's favor. Winkler gave two hits, including one that allowed Granderson to score a goal, but at that point the match was so out of reach that the Marlins had no chance of going up.
These two teams will face tomorrow afternoon at 16:10 ET.
