Bexar County’s COVID-19 positivity rate drops to 10.6%; leaders award more community tests

The positivity rate drops, hospitalizations drop

SAINT ANTHONY – Bexar County’s COVID-19 positivity rate fell three points to 10.6% this week, and local leaders are awarding more tests to identify cases earlier.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said in Tuesday night’s briefing that hospitalizations were down slightly from last week. He said some COVID-19 warning indicators are slowly starting to move in the right direction and more testing is helping people act faster.

“We have to be very vigilant at this time,” Nirenberg said.

There have been 191 new admissions to local hospitals in the past 24 hours, according to Nirenberg. He said 86% of patients in local hospitals are not vaccinated.

There are 27 children in hospitals in the area, the mayor said.

COVID-19 and schools

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff remains concerned about infections in schools after the Texas Supreme Court temporarily overturned the mask warrant for the county’s schools. He thanked the school districts for still sticking to their mask mandates.

Vaccines progress

San Antonio Metro Health Director Claude Jacob said 67% of the eligible population is fully vaccinated. He said the county had made minimal progress on immunization and Metro Health was stepping up the messages.

“We didn’t come out of the woods by any stretch of the imagination,” Jacob said.

As Labor Day weekend approaches, Nirenberg asks people attending rallies to plan ahead. He suggested meeting outside, packing individual meals, and hiding around other people who are not in your household.
