President Biden on Thursday signed an executive order to support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines recommending that international travelers be quarantined for seven days after arriving in the United States.
Executive Order of Biden says travelers must comply with CDC orders that require a negative COVID-19 test to enter the country as well as a period of quarantine upon arrival in the states.
The CDC recently published a new mandate require international travelers to test negative for coronavirus at least three days before their flight. The mandate is expected to come into effect on Tuesday.
Biden also signaled that he wanted US agencies to discuss COVID-19 protocols with Canada and Mexico at points of entry into the country.
“The Secretary of State, in consultation with the Secretary of HHS, Secretary of Transportation, Secretary of Homeland Security and Director of CDC, will immediately undertake diplomatic outreach to the governments of Canada and Mexico regarding public health protocols for land ports of entry, ”the order states.
These agencies have two weeks to return to Biden with a plan of health measures they recommend at points of entry.
Biden also wants agencies to “take immediate action” to demand that people wear masks at airports and on commercial planes, trains, public maritime vessels – including ferries – intercity bus services and all public transport. These agencies are allowed to make exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
Many of these measures were already in place during the pandemic. Businesses and public transport have demanded masks, and the CDC had its guidelines for international travel published ahead of Biden’s inauguration.
Biden has promised to be very proactive when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic. Millions of Americans have already been vaccinated against the deadly virus, and millions more are hoping to be vaccinated soon.
