Bill Gates: Target to eliminate emissions by 2030 ‘completely unrealistic’

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said on Sunday that he considered efforts to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 “completely unrealistic.”

“It is totally unrealistic to think that we could eliminate emissions by 2030,” Gates replied, adding that “not seeing that this problem is difficult will be part of the difficulty of tackling it.”

Gates then warned that worsening climate problems would affect other geopolitical factors.

“The migration that we saw out of Syria for their civil war was somewhat weather dependent,” he said. “We are going to have 10 times more migration because the equatorial zones will become unliveable, you will not be able to close or go out in summer.

“It’s all a matter of degree,” he added. “If we wait 10 more years, it’s not as bad as if we wait 20 years or if you wait 30 years, because the temperature keeps rising.”

Wallace also asked Gates about his take on the coronavirus vaccine rollout, to which Gates replied, “It gives us light at the end of the tunnel” but “we have to organize the logistics well.”

“I hope we will reopen more schools. By the fall, we should avoid waiting there because the level of vaccination will be very high, ”he added.

Gates’ remarks come as the United States approaches the 500,000 coronavirus death mark, the highest of any country. The country has also seen a drop in cases of the virus and more than 10% of the country has received at least their first dose of the vaccine.
