One of Santa Barbara’s iconic sports bars is back. The Sportsman has been redesigned into Riviera Bar.

The Riviera Bar is next to the alley and the Savoy Restaurant at 20 W. Figueroa St. After a smooth opening on Thursday, it officially opens on Friday.

For decades, the Sportsman had the grit of an old-fashioned bar, where drinkers revel in their drink of choice in the middle of the day and take long puffs of smoke in the dingy lane nearby. The Sportsman closed in 2018, but the owners then moved the business to the 1200 block of State Street.

The new place has a new vibe.

“With a restored mid-century interior, Riviera will serve strong drinks, classic and house cocktails, handpicked wines and Californian beers,” a press release read. “The menu offers snacks, salads and platters, including the signature double cheeseburger.”

Owner Kevin Boss was the manager of the former Paradise Cafe and the Shoreline Cafe. Operating partner Jim Mishler, manager Oliver Davis and office manager Karen Collyer are also Paradise veterans.

The Riviera Bar is open from 4.30 p.m. daily. Seats are allocated on a first come, first served basis and are reserved for adults 21 years of age or older.

He worked for a few years in a Grover Beach Fatte’s as a cook before founding his own in Santa Maria.

“We’re going to slowly get business,” he said.

Ariza’s restaurant faces De la Vina Street, in the same shopping center as Presto Pasta.

“It was a good place to open a business in Santa Barbara,” he said.
