A black couple from Georgia who died within hours of COVID-19 cited Tuskegee’s experience for refusing to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Martin Daniel, 53, and his wife, 22, Trina Daniel, 49, died in Savannah on July 6, their family told WSB-TV in Atlanta.

Martin Daniel was a graduate of Tuskegee University. His nephew told the TV station that Tuskegee’s 40-year experiment with syphilis, which began in the 1930s and involved suspending syphilis treatment to black men in order to study the disease, influenced his decision and that of his wife not to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Just to tie these two events together and understand the historical context of what’s going on,” said nephew Cornelius Daniel, “sometimes it really tires me out.”

Cornelius Daniel said Tuskegee’s experience also made him reluctant to get vaccinated, but eventually received his COVID-19 vaccine.

“It is imperative that we see the importance of vaccinations,” he said.
