The tests of these six lenses – the largest of which has a diameter of 1.1 meters – will continue for about six weeks at the Mayall telescope near Tucson, Arizona. This is part of an effort to make DESI operational this year.
Once completed, DESI will measure the light of tens of millions of galaxies dating back 12 billion light years. This will allow scientists to map the 3D world like never before and measure its expansion. In the end, scientists are looking for a glimpse of dark energy, which represents about 68% of the universe and would be the force behind its rapid expansion. Scientists in the research team are as enthusiastic about finding what they are looking for – a better understanding of black energy – than finding out what other mysteries that DEI could reveal.
