Patrick Kane scored twice, including 2:42 in overtime to help the Blackhawks escape with a 5-4 win over the Red Wings on Wednesday night in Detroit.
Kane's two-goal night lifted his game series to 19 straight games to give him 42 points (16 goals, 26 assists) in his longest consecutive run since his 26-game series in 2015-16. Kane, however, saw his run of 17 consecutive victories in attendance. He now has 350 goals in the regular season and 50 goals in the playoffs.
Victory momentarily elevates the Blackhawks to second place in the Western Conference.
A delusional booty opened the brand at the Little Caesars Arena. Artem Anisimov scored his 10th goal of the season against Jimmy Howard at 1:39 of the match. This was Chicago's first goal since his clash in Boston last Tuesday.
Dylan Larkin scored the game goal 4:58 later, on a change from defender Gustav Forsling who was as shabby as the anchor. Blackhawks goaltender Cam Ward made a great save on Larkin early in the race, but could not stop him again.
Brandon Saad once again gave the Blackhawks ahead with an author who overtook Howard's blocker at 12:04. Dylan Sikura managed to beat Detroit's Niklas Kronwall, giving Saad a great look for his 21st goal of the season.
Enter the second line, which was one of the main reasons for Chicago's rise in the playoff race.
Five minutes from the end of the first period, Alex DeBrincat managed to deceive the green pepper for a 3-1 lead. DeBrincat – who grew up as a Red Wings fan in Farmington Hills, Michigan – now has seven goals in his last seven games and 33 goals this season. Only Kane has more goals with 38.
Drake Caggiula left the game in the first intermission after receiving friendly shots from Jonathan Toews. The captain accidentally caught Caggiula in the eye, forcing the young striker to leave the match. It is not known if this injury will allow Caggiula to stay out of the way.
Kane extended his point streak to 19 straight games with his 37th goal of the season just 1:17 into the second period. Kane's wicked villain from the top of the right-throw circle was assisted by Toews and signaled the end to Howard. Howard's four saves on eight performances were a little "crunchy" to say the least. The seemingly safe Chicago 4-1 attack was cooked early in the third period, as the Red Wings scored two goals in 64 seconds to reduce the Blackhawks' offense to one goal. Dylan Larkin scored his second goal in the night after successfully sneaking between three Chicago players, with former Blackhawk Trevor Daley assisting in the game. Andreas Athanasiou followed suit with a power play goal to allow Erik Gustafsson to play a game at 4-3 on a late penalty.
As the game entered the final two minutes of regulation, Detroit lobbied for a long battle in Chicago. After the Red Wings pulled out their goalkeeper, Athanasiou took advantage of Anthony Mantha's superb pass to tie the score with a goal at 1:26.
Overtime has seen crazy things happen. Defender Slater Koekkoek and Ward clashed (but both were OK), Mantha nearly won on a breakaway face-to-face and Ward's helmet fell.
But as the extra session dropped by less than 3 minutes, it's a perfectly launched game from Toews to Gustafsson to Kane for the winner.
