When Blake Shelton was asked to host a show celebrating Elvis Presley's iconic "Comeback 68" TV show, the campaign star was a little shaken.
"I jumped on the opportunity," said Shelton last year. "And after that, it was:" Oooh, what am I doing? Are you sure I'm the guy? But now that we're shooting it, it's one of the most magical things I've ever done in music. "
NBC's "Elvis All-Star Tribute" – aired Sunday, February 17 – featured a ton of Nashville artists. Shelton and Carrie Underwood are joined by Keith Urban, Kelsea Ballerini, Dierks Bentley, Little Big Town, Pistol Annies and Darius Rucker. Mac Davis, a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, has also signed several Presley classics including "A Little Less Conversation" and "In the Ghetto".
They are part of a range of all genres that includes Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, John Legend, Jennifer Lopez, Post Malone, John Fogerty, Josh Groban, Yolanda Adams, Alessia Cara and Adam Lambert. It's a good mix, as the special edition of 68 has introduced several aspects of Presley.
"Elvis is one of the reasons why country music has become so cool," Shelton said. "Because he was a country guy, he was a rock guy, he was R & B. It was a bit of everything and that 's why everybody l? liked. "
The "Back in 68" was a pivotal moment for Presley: he reaffirmed his status as king of rock 'n roll and revitalized his career after years of decline.
"This special, he lived forever," said Underwood.
"I do not think anybody knows when they will (shoot a special show) what the impact will be, but the fact that we're talking about it a few decades later is a testament to his artist and his music. . "
While Sunday's special recreates several moments and elements of the original – including the iconic "boxing ring" scene – she's not afraid to try something new. Urban, for example, plays "Burning Love," which Presley did not record until 1972.
"But I've always loved that song," Urban said. "Dennis Linde, Nashville songwriter, was the author, and I'm a big fan of Dennis as well as Elvis, so it was obvious to me. Although I've never done it before, there's nothing like jumping into the depths and doing it for the first time in the Elvis special, "he said with a laugh.
