LIMA – The $ 21 million Borra Center for Health Sciences building was inaugurated on Saturday in downtown Lima.
In August 2013, the Rhodes State College Foundation Board took steps to acquire the downtown properties.
In September 2014, the college received $ 10 million for the construction of the building, including $ 5 million from the Ohio Capital Bill and $ 5 million from the Ohio Small Campus Targeted Workforce Development Expansion Fund.
In October 2018, the board of directors approved a contract with Munger Munger and Associates Architects for the design of the facility.
Construction officially began in March 2020.
On August 23, 2021, students started classes at the new institution.
The state-of-the-art 50,000 square foot facility was delivered on time and under budget.
“We have over a million dollars left for our contingencies that we can now use to start renovating the back of our main campus,” said Cynthia Spiers, president of Rhodes State College.
Pier and Renee Borra, founders of Arbor Health Care and CORA Health Services, helped provide the additional funding through scholarships and made a transformational gift to the college.
“We are very honored to be associated with the project,” said Pier Borra. It’s great to partner with Rhodes, especially with Cynthia and her team to build the state-of-the-art facility, so we’re thrilled.
“When he made the call I think we were all so excited and grateful. He’s just a wonderful person with a great vision for education, ”said Spiers.
The downtown campus is just the start in the forward-looking state of Rhodes.
“This paved the way for many great avenues for the future for Rhodes State as well, where we were able to expand the programs, not only with the original plan of this building, but also on the main campus. These goals that we have set for ourselves and are in the process of being achieved, ”said Jane Krites, Chair of the Rhodes State College Board of Trustees.
Matt Huffman, president of the Ohio Senate, would like to see a name change for the college. It was formerly called Lima Technical College before it became Rhodes State College.
“I think we need to start thinking about changing the name of this college to reflect the region,” Huffman said. Preferring to have the name Lima somewhere.
This is a concept he has brought up on several occasions and believes it will help the college to identify more with the Lima region.
“I think that would be fantastic,” Huffman said.
The college has an alumni family of more than 19,000 graduates, 87% of whom live, work and raise families in the area, according to statistics provided by Rhodes State College.
