We have fortunately been spared a similar situation with Switch because it supports many popular gaming engines and is perhaps more powerful than many people suspect from its current rivals. so, titles like Condemn, Dark Souls: Remastered and the next Witcher 3: Wild Hunting are quite similar in terms of appearance, usability and content compared to their Sony and Microsoft counterparts.

However, with the imminent launch of the PS5 and the Scarlett project in 2020, this situation is likely to change and we could go back to the time when Nintendo fans were getting their own custom versions of popular multiformat versions because of the significant performance gap between systems. Virtuos – the studio behind the switch ports of Starlink and Dark Souls: Remastered – revealed that she was already discussing with publishers the possibility of bringing a famous IP to Switch in the form of custom versions.

Speaking exclusively to Nintendo Life, Elijah Freeman, vice president of Virtuos for the Games division, said:

Many of our partners have already contacted us to help them create customized Switch titles for some of the most popular IPs in our industry.

Before we worry too much about the dark days of the Wii's return, it should be noted that these bespoke games may well prove to be exclusive vendors of systems and that "technical constraints" are not the only reason which they would happen, adds Freeman:

I think we could and will see unique versions of franchises developed specifically to exploit elements of the Switch that make it so special. I think this is due to the unique portability of the console and the quality of the gaming experience it offers players, not technical constraints.
