BOSTON (AP) – More than a year after graduating, hundreds of Boston University alumni are returning to campus on Sunday for a late opening ceremony.

The university is hosting an outdoor graduation event for the Class of 2020, which has never had an in-person debut due to the pandemic. Nearly 2,000 graduates are expected to return for the ceremony at Nickerson Field, school officials said.

This keeps the university’s promise that the May 2020 event was postponed but not canceled due to COVID-19. Now, 17 months later, it’s happening.

The university said it was implementing public health measures, including making it compulsory to wear a mask indoors. The school is demanding COVID-19 vaccination for all students and staff and said it was “strongly encouraged” for visitors.

An opening speech will be delivered by Victor J. Dzua, President of the National Academy of Medicine.

The ceremony is one of many events planned as part of the University’s Alumni Weekend. Anyone who graduated from September 2019 to September 2020 was eligible to enroll at the late start.

The Class of 2021 had its own in-person debut this year, though it was scaled down to meet city and state meeting limits.
