Today we describe a new LG patent on a foldable smartphone with a flexible full-screen screen folded around the case. The design patent was filed in Korea and seems to be a new variant of the patent that we discussed earlier this year.

LG Display has filed a design patent with KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office) for a "foldable smartphone without borders". The patent was issued and published on October 23, 2018. As always with a design patent, only sketches are provided. Unfortunately, there is no detailed description.

Foldable LG smartphone with a full screen design

The patent drawings show a rimless smartphone with a flexible screen. It's a large, flexible screen that covers all four sides of the smartphone. The display may be placed magnetically against the housing. The screen can be expanded to tablet format.

Once unfolded, you have a large screen. However, the case itself can not bend. Once folded, you have the case and screen left, while on the right you only have a flexible screen. The design is therefore significantly different from that of Royole and Samsung, both manufacturers showed their collapsible smartphone design earlier this month.

For the record, the LG Screen Design Patent is currently only issued in Korea. The patent application will be published in the WIPO database in about a year, by the usual route. If LG wants to launch such a device, there will still be time. Although it is of course also possible that the company first introduce a foldable smartphone with a telescope that will evolve over time into a full-screen smartphone, as we see in this patent.

According to the latest rumors, LG will exhibit its first collapsible smartphone at CES 2019. A month later, Huawei seems to follow. The Chinese manufacturer will probably use the MWC 2019 to unveil the first folding Huawei smartphone. By the way, Huawei has also filed the names of its folding smartphone today; Huawei Mate Flex, Flexi Mate, Mate Fold and Mate F.
