Until last year, superstar Aamir Khan was supposed to make the front page of Rakesh Sharma's biopic, which now has Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role. But while Aamir kept the secret as to the reason for his exit from the project, screenwriter Anjum Rajabali revealed that the star was so absorbed by the Mahabharata that he had to abandon the biopic, henceforth entitled Saare Jahan Se Acha.

The film, which was previously called Salute, reportedly marked a meeting for Anjum and Aamir 20 years after their previous collaboration, Ghulam (1998), which was their first film together.

"Frankly, I really wanted Aamir to do it and by that time he had loved. We had a lot of discussion. We had a lot of hope, but unfortunately (there was) the larger project of the Mahabharata, which devoured him, "said Anjum at the award ceremony of the Cinestaan India's Storytellers Contest.

His comment was greeted with a remark "Oh my God!" From Aamir, who had so far avoided talking about his very ambitious project.

Acclaiming the script of Saare Jahan Se Acha, Aamir reiterated that he had suggested Shah Rukh to listen to the story.

"It's a good scenario. Salute is a wonderful scenario and I am a big fan of Rakesh (Sharma). It's a wonderful story and I'm sad I can not do it. That's why I called Shah Rukh to tell him it was a wonderful story and that he should hear it. I'm glad he liked it. All my best wishes for the project. "

The film, which will be directed by debutante Mahesh Mathai, is scheduled for release next February.
