Argentina asks coach Scaloni to stay for Copa America 2019 – Football

BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 29 (Reuters) – Argentina has asked interim coach Lionel Scaloni to remain in charge of the team until Copa America of the year next, announced Thursday at the head of the Argentine Football Federation (AFA).

Scaloni, who has been named to succeed Jorge Sampaoli after a disappointing World Cup in Russia where South Americans have won only one game and have been eliminated by France in the last 16 matches, has not formally responded to this offer but should accept.

"We have seen the work of Scaloni and so we offer him the chance to continue until the Copa America," AFI President Claudio Tapia told reporters.

"The project is evolving and the national team is acquiring an identity and that's what we want."

The Copa America will take place in Brazil in June and July and after losing the last two finals of the shootout competition, Argentina will try to win its first major title since its victory in 1993.

Although he has little experience as a high-level coach, Scaloni, 40, has lost just one of his six friendlies, a 1-0 loss to Brazil in Saudi Arabia.

Argentina conceded only one goal in six games, winning four and one draw.
