Frenchman Benjamin Pavard Wins the Goal of the World Cup Tournament

PARIS, France – France's right-back Benjamin Pavard won the 2018 World Cup tournament trophy for his superb shot against Argentina, FIFA announced Wednesday.

Stuttgart defender Lucas Hernandez, 22, of the left, sent a right half-volley in the top corner to tie the French champions tied with Argentina (2-2 in the 57th minute). France then won the match 4-3 before beating Croatia in the final on July 15th.

Pavard's effort won a public vote to be named the best of 169 goals scored in the tournament, out of competition by Colombian midfielder Juan Quintero's free kick against Japan and Luka's goal Modric in group stage against Argentina.

The announcement comes just a day after Pavard's teammates, Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Raphael Varane, joined Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Luka Modric was nominated for the prize, after helping Croatia reach the final, with Real Madrid midfielder named tournament player in Russia. The Belgian duo Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne were also in contention with the British striker Harry Kane, in addition to Mohamed Salah, star of Liverpool and Egypt.

However, there was no room for Paris Saint-Germain and Brazilian striker Neymar. 2-1 to Belgium in the quarterfinals of the World Cup. France coach Didier Deschamps and his compatriot Zinedine Zidane, who led Real Madrid to a third consecutive title in the Champions League, have won the 11 candidates in the running for the title of male coach of the year.

Deschamps becomes the third man to win the trophy for both player and coach, joining an exclusive club with Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer. Zlatko Dalic was recognized after Croatia's impressive run in the final, while Gareth Southgate and Roberto Martinez were also among the nominees, having respectively led England and Belgium to the last four.
