The shortage of hospitals in Matabeleland is a result of the low population density caused by the migration of local citizens to neighboring countries, the government said. This comes amidst bitter complaints about a critical shortage of primary health care facilities in the three Matabeleland provinces.
The situation is such that villagers are forced to walk up to 15 km to access hospitals.
Asked by reporters about the asymmetrical distribution of hospitals in the south of the country, Munyaradzi Murwira, director of Zimbabwe's National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC), said that the search for opportunities in Botswana and Africa South far behind other provinces in terms of health care.
