The government said the shortage of hospitals in the Matabeleland provinces is a result of sparsely populated areas. This follows complaints about the lack of adequate health resources in the provinces, with some villagers traveling up to 15 km to access medical care. Speaking of World Population Day on July 11, Munyaradzi Murwira, director of Zimbabwe's National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) said:
