New Zealand champion Kerry Mountcastle has given Wellington an impressive victory over Waikato to preserve the hope of the men's Inter-Provincial semi-finals in Christchurch.

One of the country's top amateurs, Mountcastle has won four of the last six holes of Game No. 2 against Jordan Woodall of Waikato, to ensure the final point and a 3-2 win at Clearwater Golf Club.

He saw Wellington remain unbeaten after five rounds, tied with Manawatū-Whanganui and Canterbury in the first division. Manawatū-Whanganui leads Canterbury and Wellington on the games, but only one with a bye left on Thursday with only two of those teams qualifying for Friday's semi-finals.

After 12 holes, Mountcastle lost three points before attempting to win three games in a row and bring the game back to tie.

As the galleries grew, they were finally able to watch a match coming down the last hole before Woodall's wandering tee shot found the lake on the left to end a thrilling match.

Canterbury continued their winning streak with a crucial 3-2 victory over North Harbor to strengthen their semifinal position and end the hopes of the defending champions.

In Division Two, Auckland once again showed his clbad to send Tasman. The young team continued to show that it was real threats this year and sit four out of four and almost certain to qualify for the semi-finals.

They were well led by their two best players with undefeated Jared Edwards, claiming 3.5 points on his four available points, while the young Jang Hyun Lee pistol won all four games.

Northland and Otago are neck and neck in the rankings. Thursday morning will be decisive for Northland who will face Auckland in an exciting match.

The first of the last two rounds starts at 7:30.
